Our story

Started in 2025 around a park bench. Still intentional, still accessible, still ordinary.

Root & Roam began in 2025 with a handful of Cincinnati area moms who wanted more than the occasional playdate. We built in structure around faith, time in nature, and like-minded support from moms who planned to homeschool, but didn’t yet have “school aged” children.

What hasn't changed: Every family contributes — their talents, passions, resources, and time. We are committed to following Jesus, loving our neighbors, and providing a supportive and wholesome environment for our children (and ourselves) to thrive in.

Our mission

To cultivate a Christ-centered village that nurtures homeschooling families through connection, nature-based play, and practical life experiences.

We hold ourselves to three commitments:

  • Christ first — our faith informs all decisions and actions we take as individuals and collectively as a cooperative.
  • Village-minded — tangible, intentional, and wholesome community; for mothers and children.
  • Nature-based learning — all humans were created to be in and learn through nature.
Our Vision

A thriving village of families deeply rooted in Christ, connected through lifelong relationships, and inspired by God's creation.

Where children learn through exploration and wonder, and mothers are equipped, supported, and encouraged throughout the homeschooling journey.

Our priorities

Five things we keep coming back to.

Christ first

Our faith informs the collective mindset, decisions, and actions of Root & Roam.

Village-minded

Practical, supportive, face-to-face community is at the core of our group. We share effort, resources, experiences, and snacks.

Nature-based learning

Children (and all other humans) learn and thrive when spending time in God’s creation and the season’s natural rhythms.

Enrichment

Root & Roam is supplemental to your at-home educational journey. We are not limited to one curriculum or educational philosophy.

Respect for childhood

Children need protected opportunities for confidence building and risk-taking, responsibility, exploration & experimentation, imaginative play, and respectful relationships with people of all ages.

A day in the life

Dragonfly Members

We gather weekly at various parks in the Cincinnati area, which are voted on by active members. Our 10-12 week seasonal sessions cover about 3 nature-based themes and each month we cover subjects like creative arts, practical life skills, science, social studies, and more. Each week the Dragonflies enjoy a circle time with storytelling, prayer, song & rhyme, and memory verses.

A typical day looks like this:

  • 10:00 — Arrival & free play. Warm up and settle in.
  • 10:30 — Circle time. Storytelling, song, prayer.
  • 11:00 — Guided activity. Seasonal, beautiful, natural materials.
  • 11:30 — Snack & lunch. We pray and eat together.
  • 12:00 — Free play. This is where most of the learning actually happens.
  • 2:00–3:00 — Gather to clean up and say goodbye.
